'09 Book Title: Dead Air (tentative)

Publisher: MTV/Pocket Books (Simon & Schuster)

Favorite Books: Fountainhead, White Oleander, The Stranger, all things Judy Blume, Robert Cormier's Tunes for Bears to Dance to, E.R. Frank's America, Sapphire's Push, Han Nolan's Born Blue and as a kid I loved Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, Noddy books and the Mr. Men series. And so many more!!!

Favorite Bit of Writing Advice:  (Actually thoughts on the creative process from Carl Jung) "From the living fountain of instinct flows everything that is creative; hence the unconscious is not merely conditioned by history, but is the very source of the creative impulse. It is like Nature herself - prodigiously
conservative, and yet transcending her own historical conditions in her acts of creation."

Random Info about Me:
I love being silly, staying up late, eating chocolate and listening to music. I was born in Cape Town, South Africa and grew up in Boston, Mass. I have three younger sisters and a brother. Growing up, I tried to play the French horn, skateboard, play ice hockey and be an actor. I now live in Miami, FL with my husband and two young sons.  If I could have one ability it would be to sing. If I had more time I would…take more naps, paint, go to the beach more often and start a garden… My dream would be to make a cameo appearance in a movie based on one of my novels.

Dead Air Synopsis:
High school senior, Tere Adams, has one dream—to be a dj. By day she’s paralyzed by shyness, but at night, she rocks, doing mock broadcasts as Sweet T in her bedroom. Her confidence is constantly eroded by her mom, who still sees Tere as the chubby girl the other kids called Snowball. Mom thinks that Tere’s dreams are silly fantasies, but her new husband, Rob, offers Tere an internship at his top-forty radio station. Her best friend, Audrey, the only person truly aware of Tere’s vast music knowledge, encourages her to take the job.
Tere loves the internship except for the afternoon dj, Dynamite Derek, master perv, who turns everything into a sexual innuendo. Not long after a popular dj quits, Tere lands a spot helping fill-in dj, Jason Stevens with the Love Shack show. The one thing she is most afraid of is dead air, not being able to speak when Jason cues her. But when Tere realizes listeners like her, she begins to trust herself more. She understands that she must stand up to Derek, her mother and the rest of her demons because by being silent, she has allowed people to walk all over her...

The joys of shopping. Or not.

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 9:47 PM
Things I could dedicate an entire post to, but won't:
  • The total awesomeness of the California Supreme Court, which made me bounce up and down when I saw the news alert on my phone during my lunch break today.

  • Tom Felton's newest YouTube video, which was all over my flist the other day, but which I still haven't watched in its entirety. Am bad fan. :(

  • The Northeast Regional carp fishing tournament, taking place here in Central New York this weekend. The news post mentions anglers from England, but nothing about our dear Tom, alas.

  • How I have spent all week at work writing about office supplies. Yes, office supplies. I used to love office supply stores and the infinite possibilities for organization they contain. Never again.

  • How I am finally going to see Iron Man with [info]supergrover24 after work tomorrow. YAY!
No, instead I am going to talk about how I spent last Saturday shopping for wedding gowns with my newly engaged sister and our experiences with the horror of David's Bridal. )

In other news, I'd also like to take this opportunity to remind you about the Guess My Fic Contest! Since the [info]hd_worldcup reveal won't take place until next Wednesday, I'm going to leave the contest open until around 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday (since that is when I get home from work); at that time I'll officially close it to guesses, and will announce the winner (if there is one...) after the reveal. :) And remember, you can find all the Team Epilogue posts here. :D

After the reveal, I think I'm going to post a commentary about my fic, since I found myself composing one in my head the other day and figured I might as well write it down. I might also post general thoughts about the World Cup. I'm particularly interested in hearing what other participants think, since there seem to have been a lot of whispers and such going around. But we'll see.

Finally, Happy Belated Birthdays to [info]cindelius, [info]wild_fanciulla, and [info]karit!

California Same-Sex Marriage Decision

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 9:32 PM

As everyone has said, California's highest court today ruled that "the designation of marriage" must be made "available both to opposite-sex and same-sex couples." I am so happy about this, though my happiness must pale besides that by those more directly affected by the decision.

That decision, by the way, is 172 pages: 121 pages of majority opinion (including 73 footnotes), 40 pages of concurring and dissenting opinions, and 11 pages of administrative stuff (PDF, 500KB). I've only had time to skim the majority opinion (and I am, alas, not the sharpest knife in the drawer at the moment thanks to sleep deprivation), but the only word that comes to mind is "exhaustive." Which—to go off on a tangent—interests me, because there are several different potential audiences for all this exhaustive discourse, and talking to multiple audiences is a tough thing to do.

Have any of the non-lawyers here ventured into the decision itself? What did you think?

CA gets it right . . .

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 9:25 PM
I'm 35 and still an idealist.  I really do believe we can reach a future without so many injustices.  Sometimes I get proof that we might be getting a little closer--

Check out CA--  "The California Supreme Court struck down the state's ban on same-sex marriage Thursday, saying sexual orientation, like race or gender, "does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights." (CNN)

*cheers CA*

There are moments, decisions, & actions which just make a person cheer.  For me, this is one of them.  That's the way the world should work; in my opinion equality is the right path.  I don't care what your race, gender, ethnicity, creed, or orientation is.  We're all made of the same stuff; we should all be equal.

*resumes regularly scheduled work day . . . but with a big freaking smile*

I was a busy beaver on BALLAD this week. Finally I'm starting to like the look of that word count thingy. I'm like, yeah, July 1st, no problem baby. I'm suave. Me professional writer. I do polished drafts of novels in 90 days all the time.

And you know what, I'm actually sort of enjoying myself. It's mostly like any other time that I've written a novel, just with all the em, ah, and ers taken out. Oh, yeah, and very little evening TV. But other wise, I'm cool.

Oh right. And tomorrow (I'll remind you again) is my day for weekly fiction over at the new writing comm I'm a part of, Merry Sisters of Fate ([info]merry_fates  ). Today there's a discussion of blood thirsty goblins over there and Tessa ([info]everflame  ) did a piece of fiction on Wednesdays. And of course Brenna ([info]brennayovanoff  ) on Monday.

So, just in case you're strapped for time and can't type up a proper comment for my fiction post tomorrow, I've done one that you can just copy and paste:

Oh Maggie. You are truly the Future Queen of America. If your prose were a sound, it would be the lead guitar from Audioslave. If your plotting were a girl, it would look like Salma Hayek. If your dialogue had wings, it would be one of those rare, endangered things like a condor that everyone wants but nobody has. I heart you. That's all.

Truly my benevolence stuns even me. I mean, seriously. I wrote you guys a great comment. Free. Gratis. Whoo.

I'm off to go vibrate with anticipation until tomorrow, when Big Novel Things are happening.

A whole lot of blather

The girls spotted a rainbow flag on the way home from gymnastics tonight. Given that their godfathers are a m/m pair, they're no strangers to the concept of same-sex relationships, but had never had a label put on it, or had it explained that some people think it's wrong (even though we think it's perfectly okay), and thus that the flag represented support of gay pride. Seemed an appropriate lesson given CA's fantastic ruling. :)

Another milestone for MiniPlu )

This story breaks my heart. To lose any child is terrible enough, but to have been limited to one, by law, and then to lose that treasured one - I don't even want to think about it. They're taking up a collection during MiniPlu's last Chinese class on Saturday - need to remember to bring some money.

Of course, much as I cherish our two lovely little ladies from China, I wish they wouldn't fight quite so much. :P They've gone to bed two nights in a row without a story, because of squabbling. :P

Major grocery run this morning, then did a lot in the kitchen; I've had to simplify my diet for a few days in hopes of staving off a flare, which means I can't eat a lot of the stuff I already have prepared. Also made dinner for the Normal People in stages, browning the beef in the morning so I could skip ahead to the next step after gymnastics. Vacuumed car before it was buried in cracker/pretzel/cereal crumbs omg. :P Met w/ financial planner. Didn't sleep well last night, didn't get a mini-nap, either, so I'm tired. Tomorrow's my last day to myself - my dad's plane comes in late tomorrow night. Am hoping to squeeze in some writing amongst the final guest preparations, but MiniPlu gets out of school 2 hours early - they have a field trip tomorrow (despite the forecast rain) and are just sending the kindergarteners home as soon as they return. So - we'll see what I manage in the morning. Also need to call other kindergarten parents about the planned group-gift.

On a final note: Seriously, WTF? Why would you make something solar-powered if it's normally covered up?

Well I've finally got to see "Once". I'm really glad I never got around to watching it on DVD, because I much prefer seeing things on the big screen, and when I heard last week that the Lighthouse Cinema was re-opening, and that one of the first films they'd be showing again was "Once", I just couldn't let the opportunity go (even if I did have to postpone it from last Friday, when I originally intended to go)

Wow, it really is a rather brilliant, sweet, unassuming, slow-burning, nothing-but-everything film. I don't know what makes it so brilliant - there's nothing you can put your finger on and say "That's remarkable" but it just works. Like none of them were acting. And maybe they weren't really. I mean, Guy and Girl probably aren't all that far removed from Glen Hansard and Margeta Irglova. And we all know they did fall madly in massive-age-gap love.

But it was just so....*normal*, y'know?

And it was fantastic seeing Dublin being Dublin, and not being too crazily messed up and re-cut and bits of the city put beside other bits of the city which they aren't anywhere near in real life. The only bit of that I saw was when they were in Temple Bar Square and girl pointed South to Dame St and beyond saying she had to go home, when she clearly lived in Mountjoy Square ;)

But yeah, it's just such a brilliant film, and so very, very Irish, without being Oirish, and made on such a low budget, and has done so very well critically and even commercially (relative to budget) - it really does deserve the "phenomenon" label :D

Thankful for...

...all of your sweet congratulation messages

En Route

  • May. 15th, 2008 at 3:52 PM
Tomorrow my mom and I board the Rio Express (aka My Car) for the wilds of Wisconsin. I am only just praying that somehow I shall avoid the Triple Sins of Cheese, Ring Bologna, and Frozen Custard. *le sigh*

The joy of all this frenetic packing is that I'm taking an entire dufflebag of books and magazines (the last three issues of RoF, frex) to read. I'm soooo excited to read again without feeling guilty that I should be doing something else. I swiped most of the CD audiobooks from the lib'ary this afternoon--Artemis Fowl, Birdy, called Caroline, The Death Collector, and Ruby in the Smoke (which I've read, but love so much I want to hear it!). Books, books, books--I gleefully drown in the sea of them!

Also, I am writing a strange story about sentient cupcakes. Where *do* these things come from?

So, this is just to say that Internet access may be sporadic over the next ten days, though I'll surely check in when I can. Hopefully will have at least one WisCon report--there will be much celebrating w/[info]sarah_prineas's impending release, [info]sarahbethdurst's birthday, and [info]calepin's new book sale!

Off to make Unhallowed packets for my school visit w/[info]lit_mischief Tues...:)
I wish they all could be California...

(In case you hadn't seen it yet, the Supreme Court of California said that it was illegal to discriminate in disseminating marriage licenses based on the gender of the applicants. In other words, gay marriage is legal.)

Cool!

(Uncool: my email is still not working; it's on my site host's end. Sigh. Hopefully it'll be fixed soon.)

(Cool: Barrowman's website says he's coming to ComicCon this summer. I wonder if it's a coincidence that it was announced today? Probably.)
